Fall Maintenance: Your Home To-Do List Before Winter

Fall in Manitoba always seems to go by fast.

One minute we are enjoying warm afternoons, and the next we are scraping frost off the windshield and wondering where summer went.

That is why fall is such an important time for home maintenance.

Taking care of a few things before the snow and freezing temperatures arrive can help prevent moisture problems, drafts, damaged finishes, and bigger repair bills later.

Here is a practical fall maintenance to-do list for homeowners.

1. Clean Out Your Gutters

Leaves, pine needles, and debris can build up quickly in gutters during the fall.

If gutters become clogged, water can overflow and collect beside the foundation instead of being directed away from the house.

Before winter arrives, make sure your gutters are clear and draining properly.

While you are there, check that downspouts are connected and directing water well away from the foundation.

2. Check Your Exterior Caulking

Take a walk around the outside of your home and look at the caulking around:

• Siding penetrations

You do not necessarily need to climb onto the roof to do a basic visual check.

5. Check Decks, Steps, and Railings
