Newly installed storm door

Whether you're replacing an old storm door or adding a new one for extra protection and energy efficiency, getting accurate measurements is key. An ill-fitting storm door can lead to drafts, leaks, and frustration. Here’s a step-by-step guide to measuring your door properly before you buy or install.

What You’ll Need:

  • Tape measure

  • Pencil and paper

Step 1: Measure the Width of the storm door

Storm doors are measured from brickmold to brickmold, not just the door slab.

  1. Top Width – Measure across the top of the opening.

  2. Middle Width – Measure across the middle of the frame.

  3. Bottom Width – Measure across the bottom of the opening.

👉 Use the narrowest width of the three as your final measurement.

Step 2: Measure the Height

Measure from the threshold (bottom sill) to the underside of the top brickmold.

  1. Left Side – Measure from bottom to top on the left.

  2. Right Side – Measure on the right.

👉 Use the shortest height as your final measurement.

Step 3: Note the Hinge Side

Stand outside your home and decide whether the storm door should be hinged on the left or the right. Most storm doors are reversible, but it’s good to plan ahead—especially if there are light switches or obstructions inside.

Step 4: Double-Check for Obstructions

Look around the door area for things like:

  • Mailboxes

  • Railings

  • Exterior lights

  • Doorbells

Make sure there’s enough clearance for the door to open fully.

Pro Tip:

Most standard storm doors are made to fit openings 32” or 36” wide and between 80”–81” high, but always check the specific sizing guide for the brand you’re buying.
