What to Ask Your Contractor When Getting a Quote

Let’s be honest, getting a quote for work in your home can feel awkward.
You don’t want to sound like you’re grilling someone… but you also don’t want surprises, extra costs, or that “I wish I had asked” feeling later on.
The good news? A good contractor expects questions. In fact, the right questions usually lead to a smoother job for everyone involved.
Here are some simple, down-to-earth things you should feel comfortable asking during the quote process.
“Can you walk me through what’s actually included?”
This is the big one.
Instead of just looking at the total price, ask what the quote actually covers:
What work is being done
What materials are included
Whether prep, cleanup, and disposal are part of it
If it’s not written down, it’s worth clarifying. No one likes assumptions, especially when it comes to renovations.
“Is this price set, or could it change?”
Some jobs are straightforward. Others (especially in older homes) can hide surprises.
It’s okay to ask:
Is this a firm price?
What could cause it to change?
How would changes be handled?
A solid contractor won’t dodge this question; they’ll explain the “what ifs” up front.
“Are you insured?”
This one might feel uncomfortable, but it shouldn’t.
Insurance protects you if something goes wrong. Any professional contractor should be able to answer this clearly and confidently.
If the answer feels vague, that’s something to pause on.
“Who’s going to be in my house doing the work?”
Totally fair question.
Ask:
Will it be your crew or subcontractors?
Who do I talk to if I have questions?
Will the same person be there throughout the job?
Knowing who’s coming and who’s in charge goes a long way in feeling comfortable.
“How long should this take?”
Renovations don’t always run smoothly, but you should still have a general idea of the timing.
A simple:
When could you start?
Roughly how long will it take?
What might cause delays?
This helps you plan around work, kids, pets, and everyday life.
“What happens if you find something unexpected?”
This comes up more often than people think, especially in older homes.
Ask how surprises are handled:
Will I be shown the issue?
Will pricing changes be discussed before moving forward?
Do you get approval first?
You should never feel blindsided.
“How does payment work?”
No awkwardness here; this is important.
You’ll want to know:
Is there a deposit?
When is the final payment due?
How do you accept payment?
Clear answers now prevent uncomfortable conversations later.
“Do you stand behind your work?”
No job is perfect, but a good contractor stands behind what they do.
Ask:
Is there a workmanship guarantee?
What if something isn’t right after the job is done?
Accountability matters.
“Can I get this in writing?”
Even if everything sounds great, a written quote keeps everyone on the same page.
It should outline:
The scope of work
The price
The timeline
Any terms or conditions
It protects both you and the contractor.
Asking questions doesn’t mean you’re being difficult. It means you care about your home.
