March is Women’s History Month, a time to reflect on the remarkable contributions of women throughout history, particularly in business. Women have always played an integral role in shaping industries, leading companies, and paving the way for future generations of entrepreneurs. At JCJ Residential Services, we recognize the importance of this history and proudly acknowledge the incredible women who have made their mark in the business world, including our own founder, Julia Teichroeb.
The Rise of Women in Business
Historically, women have had to overcome numerous barriers to enter the business world. For centuries, traditional gender roles limited women’s access to education and financial independence, making entrepreneurship an uphill battle. However, despite these obstacles, women have continually proven their resilience and ingenuity.
The late 19th and early 20th centuries marked the beginning of a significant shift. Women like Madam C.J. Walker, who became the first female self-made millionaire in the U.S. through her successful line of beauty and hair products, began to redefine what was possible for women in business. Her success, along with others like it, paved the way for future generations of women entrepreneurs.
Breaking Barriers and Shaping the Future
Over the decades, women have broken down countless barriers in business, challenging traditional norms and reshaping industries. By the 1970s, the number of women-owned businesses began to rise steadily. Today, women own approximately 40% of all businesses in the United States and Canada. From retail to tech to home services, women have become leaders in almost every sector, often balancing the demands of business ownership with family and community commitments.
Notable figures such as Oprah Winfrey, who built a media empire from the ground up, and Indra Nooyi, who served as the CEO of PepsiCo, have been key players in showing that women can lead large corporations while also inspiring millions of aspiring female entrepreneurs. These women, and so many others, have paved the way for women today to follow their passion, launch businesses, and build legacies.
Women in Small Business
While high-profile businesswomen like Oprah and Indra have garnered well-deserved recognition, the vast majority of women in business operate small businesses, which are just as important to the economy and society. Small businesses led by women make up a significant portion of job creation and innovation, especially in local communities. Women entrepreneurs in industries ranging from construction and design to technology and retail are creating jobs, advancing local economies, and providing services that improve people's lives.
At JCJ Residential Services, we recognize the immense value of women-owned businesses in every industry. Small businesses like ours thrive because of the hard work, dedication, and unique perspective that women bring to the table. Women often bring a strong sense of community involvement, empathy, and attention to detail, which translates into better customer service and a more personal connection with clients.
The Future of Women in Business
As we look to the future, it’s clear that the impact of women in business will continue to grow. Today, more women than ever are starting businesses, creating innovative solutions, and leading teams. With access to more education, resources, and mentorship, women are positioned to excel in a wide range of industries.
However, challenges remain, particularly around securing funding, achieving gender equality in leadership positions, and navigating work-life balance. The continued support of women entrepreneurs—whether through mentorship programs, networking opportunities, or policies that promote gender equality—will be essential in creating a more inclusive and diverse business landscape.
Celebrating Women’s History Month
During Women’s History Month, it’s important to honour the women who have come before us, as well as those who are building businesses and changing the world today. At JCJ Residential Services, we are proud to be part of a growing number of women-owned businesses that are making a positive impact. We celebrate the achievements of women in business and recognize that there is still much more to be done to ensure that women have the resources, support, and opportunities they need to succeed.
As we move forward, let’s continue to inspire, support, and uplift one another, so that the next generation of women entrepreneurs can build on the foundation laid by those who came before.
